Comanche

Culture: Replicated (3) randomized block design with 5 plants/ rep. Transplant established (4/11/02) using a water wheel transplanter. Grown with Center Pivot irrigation and black plastic mulch. All other culture as normally applied to watermelons by Stevens Farms.
Problems: Some blossom end rot.

La Pryor

Culture: Replicated (3) randomized block design with 5 plants/ rep. Transplant established (4/17/02) using a water wheel transplanter. Grown with drip irrigation and black plastic mulch. All other culture as normally applied to watermelons by Tiro Tres Farms.
Problems: Some blossom end rot.

Lubbock

Culture: Replicated (4) randomized block design with 10 plants/ rep. Transplant established (5/16/02) using a water wheel transplanter. Triploid and diploid entries intermixed. Grown with drip irrigation and black plastic mulch.

Herbicides = Dual Magnum 1 pt/A in strips between mulch on May 24 & 1.5 pt/A Fusilade on May 30.

Fertilizer = 300 lbs/A 16-20-0 preplant; Sidedressed 30 lbs N on June 13 and 10; and July 2.

Problems: A thunderstorm producing 3″ precipitation 2 days after transplanting washed away much of the soil from the edges of the plastic mulch, and several thunderstorms over the next few days produced winds in excess of 50 mph. Long strips of plastic mulch were stripped from the beds, and a number of plants were pulled or injured. Consequently plant stands varied across plots.

Overton

Culture: Replicated (3) randomized block design with 5 plants/ rep. Transplant established (4/2/02). Grown with drip irrigation and black plastic mulch.

Weed control: Round up at vining

Problems: Some sun burning, crow damage
