Description
World-wide, the production of greenhouse grown vegetables (sometimes referred to as hydroponics) is a major source of agricultural income. This is particularly true in areas where land is in limited supply or of poor quality. Also hydroponic vegetable production is important in areas where the growing season is shortened by cold temperatures and supplemental heat and light are required for plant growth. Here in Texas, we have an abundance of productive land, a long growing season and access to global markets that supply produce year-round. As a result, greenhouse vegetable production in Texas has not demonstrated a good track record for long term profitability.
