Description

A cool-season perennial to three feet from a wintering basal rosette with several erect to spreading stems forming a rounded crown. It has a deep taproot and deeply lobed leaves to 10’’, mostly basal with long stalks. Leaves and stalks shorter as you go up the stem. The leaves and stems are covered with stiff hairs. Numerous long-stalked flower heads blooming March to July with 8-10 yellow rays and numerous disk flowers. The ray flowers expand in the late afternoon and fold under the following morning in intense sunlight.

Habitat

Adapted to a wide range of climate and soil types; particularly drought-tolerant. Likes sandy and clay loams best and does not do well in heavy clays, saline, or deep sands.
