broomrape infecting a tomato plant

Click on the image(s) above to see larger version.

Symptoms:
Broomrape is a parasitic flowering plant with yellow/white stringy stems that uses the tomato plant to produce its food because it is not green and cannot conduct photosynthesis. Seeds germinate near the soil line and the plant infects the root system, gradually starving the tomato plant. This parasite is not widely distributed.

Control:
Infected plants should be removed from fields and destroyed. Fumigation of entire fields may be necessary to control severe infections.
