This Master Gardeners' group has as its objective the use of garden projects to improve the quality of life in inner-city neighborhoods. These Master Gardener interns will assist Novak in collecting data in his research program on the benefits of gardens in rejuvenation of dysfunctional neighborhoods. This work is being conducted jointly with the Houston Urban Gardening Program.
"Realization that one is a participant in the global community is an essential part of a student's education. Community service, the willingness to help others by sharing the knowledge that we have learned, is vital to the success of our public and private institutions. Education is not complete unless that education is shared with those less fortunate to help improve their lives. Students in all of my classes gain an understanding of the practicality of their education and are given opportunities to participate in projects that allow them to use their knowledge of horticulture for the betterment of our communities."
