What is Vermicompost?

Vermicomposting is using earth worms to decompose organic materials. The benefit of using this technique is to produce a very rich soil amendment and natural orgainic fertilizer called worm castings. The casting is the waste product of the earth worms, which are rich in orgainic material and loaded with nutrients that plants can easily make use of.

The worms live in a specially designed container inside the greenhouse facility. The container is kept covered and the interior moist to provide the best environment for the worm to produce the valuable castings. The worms are fed mostly kitchen scraps and other organic materials. There are some images below to show examples of both the worms and the container.
