You know there are a lot of fat folks out there looking for ways to lose weight. Not you I'm sure, but a lot of people are. And this may be the answer, good old celery. And at this time of the year you can get it fresh, it's tasting good.

People tell me that you actually use more calories eating this stuff than what's actually contained in the stalk that you eat. So, you know, just eat yourself to death if you want to and loose a little weight while you're doing it.

Next thing is of course, if you're going to lose weight lets make fun out of it and eat something that's good. And one way to ensure a good celery product is to locally grow them. We don't want any of that shipped in stuff. If you look behind me you'll see acres and acres of celery. Texas is number two or three in celery production in the entire United States. So at this time of the year you know you're getting fresh Texas-grown celery, at least you hope you are.

Next thing you may wonder is, "Why can't I grow that in my own back yard garden?" Well, the problem is that on a hard year, if we have a freeze it sometimes can freeze and burn back, whereas in the Rio Grand Valley, where they very seldom have a freeze, this is a more reliable place to grow it.

Also the nice thing about celery is that there are very little insect or disease problems that get on it so it's almost and organically grown type of product. So you can feel good about eating it, loosing all that weight, and enjoying a fresh Texas Crop.

This is Jerry Parsons, Vegetable Specialist for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, the Weekend Gardener.
