Ornamental Kale

Transcript

Well for the past couple of weeks we've been talking about beautification of the winter landscape with flowering annuals. Today we're going to talk about beautification of it with beautiful heads; appropriate don't you think? The heads we're talking about are heads of cabbage, heads of ornamental kale, and things like that.

This is ornamental cabbage that I'm holding and, of course, that white center is beautiful, especially in shaded areas where pansies and dianthus and some of those things won't do well in. You can plant these and they will do extremely well, regardless of how cold it gets. These things can take extremely cold temperatures so they are a real sure fire plant to beautify your winter landscape.

Of course you may not want to just plant something for pretty. You might as well plant spinach; you still have time for that. Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, all that kind of stuff and you can still plant it this time of the year. If you are looking for something as a late Christmas gift you might want to run around and check some of your local vegetable producers because they've got cauliflower and broccoli ready to go for this Christmas season. Have a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the heads of beauty.

This is Jerry Parsons, Vegetable Specialist for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, the Weekend Gardener.
