Fall IS THE Time for Planting Annuals

When you visit some of the Botanical Centers and watch how some of the professionals do it, you wonder how do people make their plants bloom so pretty. They've got these Dianthus planted here in the middle of the fall and almost winter. Some of the blooming kale. If you look behind us we have some roses back there that are in full bloom.

The key to all of this is timing. Doing the right thing at the right time. You may say, "Well, I pretty well know," but sometimes we forget from year to year exactly when to do what. For instance, if you look up in your pear tree and you see dead limbs or fireblight. You say, "Well, I wonder when should I spray it?" You may even wonder what that is? If you go on and say, "Well, I would like to plant a tree in my yard that's got pretty color on it, the leaves are turning on it this time of the year, but which are those trees."

And then you look in your tomato garden or in your vegetable garden and you see these big pretty tomatoes in the fall and you say, "Well, mine never looked that well. I wonder when I should have planted those and which variety I should have planted." Then you may say look at these peppers, these beautiful Texas A&M peppers and you wonder, "When in the world should I have planted those or what are those?" Here's the perfect Christmas gift that you can get in some of your local nurseries around. It's called Texas Gardener Planning Guide and Calendar and it tells you exactly what to do and what to do it with. If you are out of town and not in the San Antonio Area you can order it by calling 817-772-1270 and that a way you will know what to do and what to do it with.

This is Jerry Parsons, Vegetable Specialist for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, the Weekend Gardener.
