Growing Blackberries in Texas

Well, it's berry-picking time in Texas and obviously the blackberries are ripening. A lot of people don't realize when to pick blackberries. It's obvious it's when they're black is when they're ready. Now if they've got any type of red on them like that, or if they're red solid like that, they'll pucker you from one end to the other. Now, you see a lot of productive berries here, a lot of berries on these vines, and these are A&M berries Brazos or Rosborough, and, of course, they're beautiful this time of the year and will be available for the next couple of weeks. We are at a pick your own operation down here in Devine called the Love Creek Pick Your Own Operation, in Devine, on 2200 highway, going toward Yancey. They are open from eight to eight and you can come down here and pick all the berries you want to, because, as you can see, it doesn't take you very long to get a big basket full of blackberries.

But you might want something a little bit different for Texas, and that's Boysen berries. With Boysen berries you want to pick them when they get to be dark red, such as we have here. They go from a real bright red, to kind of a darker red, and then to a real dark red, not quite black, and then Boysen berries are ready. Also Boysen berries are trailing and that's why they've got them on this long tunnel which is over one hundred feet long. So the berries are ready, as you can see, and you better come on down here, we're in Devine, at Love Creek Pick Your Own Orchard, down at Farm Road 2200 going toward Yancey, and I don't know how much longer they're going to last, because people are eating them pretty fast.
