Winterizing Lawns

You know a couple of weeks ago we were talking about fertilizing this Bermuda grass that kind of thinned out during the hot and dry weather.

Well guess what happened? When we fertilized that thinned out Bermuda grass the winter weeds started sprouting. So what we need to do now is to go ahead and spray those winter weeds with something that will kill the weeds and not hurt the Bermuda. It might brown it a little, but it won't kill it. And that product is MSMA. Capital M, capital S, capital M, capital A.

If you've got an area that St. Augustine is encroaching on Bermuda, this stuff will kill St. Augustine as well. So don't spray it on your St. Augustine lawn, but it will kill St. Augustine out of Bermuda as well. So if you want to renovate your yard all Bermuda use MSMA.

Now, this Bermuda's going to be thin all fall long, it's going dormant. So you want to put a pre-emergence weed killer on there so that these weed seeds won't sprout as they have done already. Before you spray or either immediately after use a product such as Portrait. You should also use this product in amongst the thin St. Augustine so the winter weeds won't come into there.

Be sure now is the time to put on your winterizer fertilizer because we've got to make this grass healthy enough because it's stressed already and it will die this winter if we don't keep the winter weeds out of it and winter fertilize it.
