Periclinal Leaf Variegation Periclinal Leaf Variegation in African Violets

Many mistakenly conclude that all variegated African violets are chimeras. Our research has shown that the 'Tommie Lou' types are not chimeras, but the pattern is genetically inherited giving rise to cultivars with the 'Tommie Lou' "type" foliage. One such cultivar is 'Candy Lou'. In our radiation work, we did have several periclinal chimeras result, one of which (a sport from 'Valencia' identified as 22-2) is pictured below.
