Tiny brown spots surrounded by yellow halo may appear on young leaves as a “stippling” effect (Image 1). Symptoms produced on fruits are more important than leaf symptoms, though.  The virus can overwinter in wild hosts and in infected seed.  It is spread from infected plants by the dagger nematode (Xiphinema spp.), grasshoppers, tobacco thrips, tobacco flea beetles and several other insects.
