Building a good, professional relationship with your advisor is very important. It requires effort on your part as well as on the part of your advisor. It is your responsibility to initiate contacts with your advisor. Make appointments when possible or sign up on your advisor's schedule to save time and to be sure that your advisor is there when you come. Out of courtesy and professionalism, appointments should be kept or your advisor should be notified in advance of your need to change or cancel an appointment. Preparation of a list of items for discussion before meeting with your advisor will help you get the maximum benefit from your visit and help assure that you will cover all of the essential topics when you are in your advisor's office. Your faculty advisor will likely be writing letters of recommendation for you some day, so make a good impression by being punctual and direct.
All faculty advisors are busy people, but they have volunteered to be advisors because they enjoy working with students and recognize the importance of effective guidance. Please do not hesitate to work with your advisor.
If there is information that your faculty advisor cannot provide, feel free to check with us in the coordinators' office. Perhaps we can be of assistance.
To be assigned to a faculty advisor or to request a change in faculty advisors, obtain the necessary form from the coordinator's office and arrange a visit with the undergraduate coordinator.
