Thinking about Image Files
The images linked below are all similar to the one at right. When originally viewed in Adobe PhotoShop, they were 3.26 x 2.18 inches. They were scanned at 800 dpi from a color slide and the original dimensions were 1.35 x 0.9 inches.
JPEG image at 300 dpi
JPEG image at 150 dpi
JPEG image at 72 dpi
GIF image at 72 dpiThe maximum screen resolution on current monitors is 72 dpi. If an image is stored at more than 72 dpi, it will automatically "oversize". You must begin to think in pixels, rather than in inches when it comes to laying out your pages.
In like manner, images will appear physically "smaller" if viewed on a computer set at 800x600 resolution than they would if viewed on a computer set at 640x480 resolution.
