Dual-purposing a Web Accessible Database
Dynamic, Web-accessible databases have many advantages over static html pages.
In order to access the database, however, the user must have access to an active Internet connection.
- Database information can be updated often and easily.
- The database records can be added by persons unfamiliar with html coding through the use of input forms.
- Database records can be searched and sorted by a few or many criteria.
- And, the look and feel of the user-interface can be modified by changing the code in only one html file.
Database records can be stored on a CDROM by simply saving the record pages as html source code, downloading the graphic and accessory files, and then writing a simple index file containing links to the pages. Then, the database records can be accessed offline using the Web browser as the navigation and display application.
This tutorial will illustrate the creation of a CDROM using the Texas Native Trees database.
