The Theoretical Basis of Sociohorticulture lies in the innate relationship between people and plants.
We evolved in a world of greens and browns. Plants have long been our sources of food, clothing, construction materials and fuel. Forests and meadows were our original habitat. Plants are a part of our aesthetic environment.
Involvement with the plant world is natural and beneficial to us; involvement with the plant world is a source of comfort that is innate, built in our genetic material.
In sociohorticulture we recognize and use this relationship between people and plants to bring about positive changes in the lives of special groups of people.
