Tips and Techniques to Make HORT 315 Easier
Break out of the "Chalk Talk" Syndrome
HORT 315 is not like your typical lecture/discussion/quiz
format course. Forget your preconceived notions about how a course is supposed
to be set up.... and go with the flow! If you have an idea that you believe
will improve the course, MAKE YOUR SUGGESTION IMMEDIATELY via a brief email to Dr. Hall. Don't wait until class evaluation time!
Develop Your Own Schedule and Pace Yourself
You have been given a great deal of latitude in completing assignments... but we cannot change the ending time of the semester. Set aside some time each week to work on your modules and complete the assignments. Don't wait until the last of April and expect to get everything done. I will be monitoring assignment and essay submissions in an attempt to keep everyone on task, but YOU HAVE the ultimate responsibility for pacing your progress. Remember, the traditional section has 3 hrs of lecture per week, and that does not include the out of class time to prepare for writing essays and study for exams. You should be prepared to make a similar time investment. Visit the ICN Web site for a good overview of the skills needed to be a good distance learner.
BACK UP... BACK UP... BACK UP...
My computer crashed! I thought I posted that assignment. The Web connection was so slow I couldn't do the assigment. The computer was too busy to log in.
Computers will be busy, and they will crash. However, that is not an acceptable excuse for tardy assignments. Keep back up copies of all your work on a different floppy disk, and print the final preview of all assignments submitted online using
the "print" function of your browser. Print out hard copies of information
from the class notes and other useful Web sites and make a notebook. That
will really help when exam time rolls around.
Communicate...
Become a scavenger of information. If you don't understand a concept, are having trouble finding information, or need additional help... please ask someone!
