Growing Wild!
The issue of "invasive species" has gained momentum in the last 5 years, and concern is building about the impact of invasive species legislation on the ornamental plants and landscaping industries. Many species now considered invasive were released intentionally for erosion control, wildlife conservation, or for ornamental uses (see the case of multiflora rose as an example.) The list of species considered invasive by the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council contains many "ornamentals" including Schefflera, Ficus, Lantana, Ligustrum, and Mexican petunia. Ironically, Mexican petunia has been recommended by Texas AgriLife Research and Extension professionals as a Texas Superstartm landscape plant.
Define what is meant by an invasive species and focus your definition on plant species rather than insect, fungal, or animal. What plant features are indicators of potential invasiveness? Propose several ways the ornamentals industry might reconcile the conflict between environmental adaptability and potential for invasiveness?
