INTRODUCTION:

Composting is an excellent way to recycle organic materials, to take trash and turn it into treasure.  Well made compost can be one of the most valuable additions to any garden soil.  In its earlier stages of decomposition compost can be used as a mulch or applied to vegetable and flower garden soils.  In later stages of decomposition it is an excellent potting medium for container plants and for raised planter beds.

OBJECTIVES:

The objectives of this lab activity are to learn how to produce make an aerobic compost and to apply it to garden soil. 

ACTIVITY:
  •  Work as a group to make a compost pile and observe the development of the compost pile.

  •  Use the compost made in lab to amend the soil in the Holistic Garden.

  • Observe the vermicomposting units in the holistic garden and manage one of the worm bins for part of the semester.
