| Students in HORT 301 can earn bonus
points for approved, out-of-class, plant-related activities. A maximum of 100 points
can be counted. This would allow a change in letter grade of one letter. The
following can be used for bonus credit. |

| CULTURAL REFERENCES: 5
POINTS (1 POINT FOR EACH OF 5 CULTURAL REFERENCES THAT INCLUDE HORTICULTURE)
Copy only passages that contain a horticultural reference. Reference must include
the source. Do not include references on the culture of horticultural plants.
Copies will not be returned to you. Examples of cultural references include such
things as cartoons, essays, novels, religious references to gardens or plants, art, poems,
proverbs, books, children's literary references to gardens, opera, short story, popular
music, etc. |

| HORTICULTURAL SUPPLY CATALOGS:
5 POINTS (1 POINT FOR EACH OF 5 DIFFERENT HORTICULTURAL SUPPLY CATALOGS)
These must be ordered early to arrive before the day of the lecture final. They must
be turned in with the address label on the envelop or catalog. These are yours to
keep and they will be returned to you at the end of the course. Do not include
garden magazines. Seed catalogs, nursery catalogs, greenhouse supply catalogs, tool
catalogs, pest control supplies, etc. all qualify if they apply to the garden.
Addresses may be obtained by leafing through garden magazines, but garden magazines do not
qualify as supply catalogs. |

| EXTENSION PUBLICATIONS: 6 POINTS
(2 POINTS FOR EACH OF 3 TEXAS AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION SERVICE PUBLICATIONS ON GARDENING
OR GARDEN RELATED TOPICS) Write to your county agent for extension publications
in areas of gardening that are of most interest to you, for examples, house plants,
organic gardening techniques, vegetable gardening, pest management in the garden,
etc. Turn them in with the addressed label from the county agent's office.
These are returned to you at the end of the semester. |

| WWW SITES: 5 POINTS (1 POINT
FOR EACH OF FIVE DIFFERENT WEB PAGES) Surf the web for garden information.
Print out the first page or the entire reference for five different web pages. Be
sure to include the WWW address. These will be returned to you at the end of the
semester. |

| PLANT: UP TO 20 POINTS.
Adopt a plant at the start of the session. Repot it and grow it throughout the
session and bring it in for grading at the end of the session. You can keep the
plant after it has been graded. |
|
| GARDEN ACTIVITIES: 10 POINTS PER
HOUR. Come to any of the community service garden projects and work under the
instructors supervision. These will be announced for different times during the
session. Gardens include the holistic garden behind HFSB, local nursing homes, and
various community gardens. |
|
| ATTENDANCE: 1 POINT PER
DAY. Attendance will be taken from time to time at some point during the lecture
period. This will be approximately ten times and is worth up to 10 bonus points. |

| Prepare
your bonus credit materials in a folder. Put your name on all pieces and on the
folder. Turn the folder in near the end of the session. All materials must be
submitted by the end of the last regular lecture day of the session. |
