Springold
Released by the USDA breeding program in
Byron, GA in 1966. Springold has been a popular early season
variety for high chill areas, but has not been planted much
lately. Fruit are usually of good quality if it gets sufficient
chilling, but the variety is difficult to size. Larger
early-season varieties are now being grown in the Medium Chill
Region that can out-compete Springold. Fruit below were
grown in Zone 4.
Chill Req.: 800
C.U., Ripe: -57 D.B.E. ( about 5/18 in Central
Texas). Zones 1-4.
