"Creating a Texas Country Garden...A Harvest of Ideas"
Another popular Oktober Gartenfest symposium will take place at Winedale, Texas (Fayette County, Central Texas) on October 24th and 25th, 2003. The Symposium is hosted by The University of Texas Center for American History and its Winedale Division near Round Top, Texas in cooperation with Texas Cooperative Extension, The Texas A&M University System, The Herb Society of America Pioneer Unit, and the International Festival-Institute At Round Top.
Again, participants will enjoy excellent meals as well as lectures of interest to Texas gardeners and native plant enthusiasts. These lectures will cover topics such as the traditions, trends, and plant palette of Cottage Gardens, Garden Design, citrus, figs and vegetables suitable for our area of Texas. A presentation on methods utilized to maintain historical gardens such as those of Bayou Bend in Houston is also featured.

Greg Grant, Texas horticulturist There will be a sale of rare, hard-to-find, heirloom and novel plants for the avid gardener. Greg Grant, noted Texas horticulturist and plant breeder, will highlight many of the sale’s featured plants in his slide show.
There will be a TOUR of several local gardens after the close of the symposium and plant sale. A map detailing directions to the gardens will be available upon registration for the symposium. The gardens of Jerald and Libby Winston Mize, Tony and Kay Scanapico and Gary and Agelia McGowan (as well as the gardens of Festival Hill) will be featured. There will be no workshops nor tours on Friday afternoon.
Gartenfest registration will begin on the Menke House (Festival Hill) front porch at 5:00 p.m. Friday.
Note: Texas Master Gardeners may now earn 8 hours of Recertification credit by attending the Saturday lecture series.
