Welcome
Hello and welcome to my rose pages. The purpose of this site is to inform the public about the merits of Brownell and Tea roses, describe their history and showcase the varieties through pictures. "Brownell" roses, as they are known, were created by Dr. Walter D. Brownell. This group of roses have diverse backgrounds, from Rosa whicuriana and various Hybrid Perpetuals to modern Hybrid Teas. Today, roughly 15-20 are comercially available, several of which are listed here. The tea rose class came about around 1837, originating from crosses with Hume's Blush Tea-Scented China, Park's Yellow Tea Scented China, and Bourbons....later Hybird Perpetuals. Their popularity persisted until the early 1920's, when the Hybrid Teas' popularity exploded. Over one hundred varieties of this class are comercially available worldwide. These types of roses do very well in the southern U.S. (Brownells are cold hardy as well, teas are not), standing up to hot and humid conditions. The roses picutred above are two Brownell hybrids: Curly Pink and White Cap. All photos on this webpage were taken by me. Please ask if you want to reproduce them.
