| Sand Sagebrush, Sand Sage, Sand Wormwood|
Sand sagebrush is a large, sprawling shrub with aromatic, silver, thread-like foliage. The insignificant flowers release a pollen that triggers an allergic reaction in some people. It grows in deep sands and dunes and sometimes calcareous soils in the western third of the state, and will not tolerate heavy soils or shade in cultivation. It is used in landscaping for its graceful, silver-gray foliage, as an accent or background plant. Cutting it back periodically may help to keep the plant dense, especially if it gets thin in harsh winters.
