Foxtail Lily, Desert Candle
Eremurus spp.

Liliaceae

Basal sword-like leaves are 18-24 inches long. Inflorescences are substantial spikes with hundreds of flowers in mid-summer opening indeterminately (from bottom to top) over 2-3 weeks. Flowers and foliage wither by late summer, but the show they put on is well worth the minor unsightly appearance afterward. Cultivation can be difficult, so pay special attention to planting and tending directives.
