Asteraceae

Long, 8 to 12-inch, narrow, lanceolate leaves surround long thin stems with interesting buds and blooms. Solitary buds are composed of scale-like papery bracts that open to cornflower blue flowers. Bracts remain after the flower is done, creating a scaly, airy ball that intersperses with the blue flowers to make an interesting contrast.
