In Memory of Marjorie Lucille Hurt
March 8, 1922-June 21, 2011
Marge Hurt was born in New Summerfield, TX and graduated with a Home Economics degree from Texas Women's University in Denton. She spent most of her life in Odessa where she began her career as a home demonstration agent. Marge was married to Myers Hurt and the mother of 3 sons.
She was an early graduate and supporter of the Landscape Design Study Course program of National Garden Clubs and Texas Garden Clubs, Inc.. She was involved at local, state and national levels in the horticultural world. Professor Robert Rucker was chairman of the National Garden Club landscape program and Marge provided support and also had him design the garden for her beautiful home in Odessa during the late 1960s.
Professor Rucker moved from the University of Oklahoma to Texas A&M University where he headed the Department of Horticultural Sciences. Upon Professor Rucker's retirement Dr. Bill Welch was asked to coordinate the landscape design study courses at the state and national levels. Marge has attended and supported this program until illness this spring prevented her attendance. She sold books to provide financial support for the William C. Welch scholarship fund and helped select the two annual recipients of the award each spring. Currently the fund provides two, two thousand dollar scholarships, one to a graduate student and the other an undergraduate each year at Texas A&M University. Along with her long time friend Hazel McCoy, Marge carefully studied the qualifications of each applicant and attended the awards dinner and communicated with each recipient through Spring 2011.
Mrs. Hurt continued to support the Texas AgriLife Extension Service and became active in the Permian Basin Master Gardener program through the Ector/Midland County Horticulture Agent, Debbie Benge Frost. At a ceremony in Odessa this spring she was honored with a special recognition for her contributions by the Permian Basin Master Gardeners. She was recipient of too many awards and recognitions to mention.
In addition to her three sons, Joe Hurt of Kingwood, Steve Hurt of Odessa and Myers Hurt II of Dallas. Marge loved and supported each of her 6 grandchildren all of whom, along with many friends attended her beautiful memorial service at First Presbyterian Church in Odessa on June 27. The family has asked that memorials be sent to the William C. Welch Scholarship Fund in care of Eleanor Floeck, 4964 E. Highway 290, Giddings, Texas 78942-2903
