One of the biggest challenges of classroom gardens is to maximize the learning opportunites for the students. It is important to tie garden activites into curriculum and make sure to have regularly scheduled "garden time." Using a garden as a teaching tool can be both exciting and rewarding if proper steps are taken to plan and organize lesson plans.
The author of this site is actively involved in gardening with children and volunteers for a local classroom garden. She conducts weekly programs for students in grades k-12 in addition to developing a planting schedule. The following is an outline of the lesson ideas that have been developed by the author. Hopefully these suggestions can be helpful for teachers and parents looking for lesson topics and activities for their garden projects.
