A comparison of normal (top rows) and homozygous rin (bottom rows) flowers and fruit. Normal fruit and flowers are from L. esculentum cv. Ailsa Craig; rin mutants are near isogenic lines with Ailsa Craig. The flowers show the macrocalyx (mc) mutation, resulting in large sepals, that cosegregates with the rin locus. While the linkage between rin and mc has not been uncoupled, complementation experiments with other mc mutants demonstrates that rin and mc are separate genes. The fruit shown are immature fruit, mature green fruit (5 days prior to initiation of color change), red ripe fruit (7 days post-initiation of color change), and mature green fruit treated with ethylene for 3 days.
