Planting
Most vegetables are started from seed. Three are propagated asexually, sweet potatoes, Irish potatoes and garlic. Sweet potatoes are started as transplants grown from roots by putting the roots in a warm medium, Irish potatoes are started by planting small whole tubers for the fall crop or cutting large tubers into 1 or 2 ounce seed pieces for the spring crop, and garlic is planted from the larger bulb (toes or cloves) that are broken out of the multiple bulb.
Vegetables that are grown from seed may be seeded directly in the garden soil or transplanted. Many can be handled in either way. Any plant can be transplanted if given enough care.
