Cultural Practices Guidelines

Introduction

  • Pears are not self-fruitful, so plant more than one variety to improve fruit set.
  • Pear trees tend to grow very upright, so trees can be placed as close as 16 feet apart.
  • In order to minimize the risk of fire blight infection, limit the inputs of nitrogen and water to keep trees growing, but not overly vigorous.
  • Pruning should be kept at a minimum, so use weights or tie branches in a horizontal fashion to encourage lateral branching.
  • When pruning becomes necessary, use pruning paint to cover the wound immediately after making the cut.
