Shipping Woes
Pages in this article:
During simulated shipping, all Surfinia Petunia 'Mini Brilliant Pink' plants from the Week 3 and 6 plant dates suffered mechanical and physiological injury from being crammed into sleeves and they took 3 to 4 weeks to recover to their pre-shipping quality. Damage included yellowing of leaves, loss of flowers, and crushed flowers and foliage. Plants from later planting dates fared much better.
Simulated shipping also caused damage to Scaevola 'New Wonder' and Tapien Verbena 'Blue Violet'. The damage was far worse on plants from the first two plant dates. Scaevola 'New Wonder' as a group fared better than the other two species. Scaevola foliage did not yellow, wilt or twist during shipping and the long trailing stems did not break. However, some flowers faded almost to white in color. The inflorescences of Tapien Verbena 'Blue Violet' browned and drooped and foliage became wilted and broken.
