Nematode Damage to Corn Roots
may be caused by several different species of plant parasitic nemaodes, including sting, lance, stubby root, lesion, stunt, and perhaps others.

Stubbiness and rotting of roots indicate nematode damage. Stunting and unthriftiness may occur with some types. Corn so damaged will not withstand drought as readily as non-nematode-damaged corn. The nematodes may survive in the soil indefinitely.
