Smut
caused by the fungus Ustilago maydis.

Damage results mostly from ear infections, although smut on the stalk can cause it to break. The smut galls occur on any part of the corn plant where very young or embryonic tissues are exposed. Initial infections to young plants in the field come from spores that overwinter on the surface of untreated seed or old corn debris. Secondary infection occurs in the field.
