Results Summary: 2005 TCE Statewide
Watermelon Trial

By
Eric Cox, Extension Assistant & Dr. Frank J. Dainello, Extension Horticulturist - Commercial Vegetable Crops, Department of Horticultural Sciences, Texas A&M University

Ten hybrids and 20 triploid (seedless) varieties and / or advanced breeding lines were evaluated at five locations (La Pryor, Lubbock, College Station, Comanche and Weslaco). The entries were evaluated using a randomized complete block design having a minimum of three replicates / entry. All trials were established on 6’ - 8‘ wide, black plastic mulched raised beds, except for the Lubbock site, due to high winds and damage. Transplants were set at an in row spacing of 2.5‘ - 3‘ spacing depending upon the availability of transplanting units. Drip irrigation was used at all locations to supply water needs, except for the Comanche site, where overhead center pivot sprinkers were used. Windbreaks were established in the trials at Lubbock, Weslaco, Comanche and College Station. The varieties ‘Royal Sweet’ and ‘TriX 313’ were considered the hybrid and triploid checks respectively. Once-over harvest was employed at all locations except Weslaco, Lubbock and College Station, where the plots were harvested on three occasions.

Total marketable yield data for each location as well as the average marketable yield across all locations is presented in Table 1. On the basis of statewide average yields, a considerable amount of triploid entries produced greater yield than the check, ‘Tri-X 313’, which produced 67,207 lbs/A. Topping the list was RWT 8145 at 84,865 lbs/A. Summer Sweet # 5244, a variety widely considered one of the industry standards, faired well with 80,681 lbs/A.

In the hybrid category all of the entries produced greater yields than the check, 'Royal Sweet', with Ole topping the list at 72,078 lb/A. Summer Flavor 800, another variety widely considered one of the industry standards, was second on the list with 70,944 lbs/A.
