Dacthal® Herbicide to be Available Once More!

Three years ago, the production of Dacthal® was discontinued by ISK because it could not be made and sold economically. AMVAC, the manufacturer and marketer of Vapam®, Dibrom®, and Bidrin® saw an opportunity to add a valuable herbicide to their growing portfolio of specialty products. Following an extended effort to acquire the business and develop a new source of production, AMVAC Chemical Corporation has recently announced that Dacthal will be available to U.S. growers early this year. All that remains to be done is for the EPA to approve the new manufacturing source.

Dacthal was granted a Registration Eligibility Document (RED) by the EPA in 1998, and the recommendations in the RED have been incorporated in the new label. However, this has not changed the list of crops or uses for the product, which remain essentially the same as those covered by the ISK Biosciences labels in 1997. The only major change is that turf and ornamental uses are now embodied in the agricultural label and not on a separate label, as before.

Once the new source is approved, sales will commence in the U.S.A. for the first time since the end of 1997.

The commercial product will be a 75-percent wettable powder packed in 24-pound bags, two to an outer case -- the traditional product packaging.
