Salinas, Calif.-based The Nunes Co. Inc. started shipping heads of purple cauliflower and bags of value-added multicolored cauliflower florets under its Foxy brand at the end of May.

Distributed Nationally, Dutch seed company Daehnfeldt developed the purple cauliflower, said Matt Seeley, marketing director for Nunes.

Acreage of the purple cauliflower began last year n the Salinas Valley and has doubled to 50 acres this year, he said.
The product is being shipped out nationwide mostly to existing customers, he said.

Foxy purple cauliflower heads will be available through November.

The company is also planning on growing the crop in the desert this winter, Seeley said.

Also being shipped is the company’s new CauliColors value-added pack of purple, orange, green and white cauliflower florets in a 9-ounce bag.

Though it’s a traditional retail pack, The Nunes Co. is targeting the product to its foodservice clients, Seeley said.
“We feel that the foodservice (industry) is going to really support this because of the color it adds to the plate,” he said.
