Beet Pseudo-Yellows Virus (BPYV)

Symptoms:
Also known as cucumber yellows and muskmelon yellows, this virus disease is particularly damaging in greenhouse plantings. Older leaves develop interveinal chlorosis that may resemble nutritional deficiency. The yellow tissue between the veins becomes thickened and brittle as the disease progresses, and eventually develop into necrotic lesions. Plant vigor is reduced adversely affecting yield, but fruit may not develop symptoms.

Control:
Control of beet pseudo-yellows must focus on control of the greenhouse whitefly, the insect vector of the virus. Since the virus is present in many ornamental, vegetable and weed species, an inoculum is always present. Greenhouse sanitation, crop rotation, and establishment of an ornamentals-free zone around the greenhouses is advised.
