EVERYDAY GARDENING ROUTINES
People and gardens both benefit from daily routines. As with people, some tasks are better performed early in the day and others are best at day's end. Here are some ideas to help both you and your garden flourish.
- Water early in the day and thoroughly saturate the area. The damp leaves will dry in the day's heat, preventing moisture-related disease problems.
- After a night's cool respite, blooms are at their best. Cut your flowers remembering to cut them at an angle to take up moisture better than if they are cut straight across.
- This is a good time to fertilize giving your garden a little nutrition before starting the day. First apply clear water; then feed with a water-soluble liquid fertilizer to keep plants blooming.
- In the evening, remove spent flowers. Always cut directly above a set of leaves. If you have vegetables or herbs, picking them fresh now adds to a nutritious meal.
- It's also a good time to mow since the lawn is dry and your lawn can heal before the sun becomes scorching again.
The anticipation of these rituals feed the need for structure and solace in a busy world.
