WILDLIFE IN THE BACKYARD

February is the perfect time to plan a backyard wildlife habitat. Planting shrubs, trees and flowers will attract numerous wildlife visitors to your backyard. Make a list of the birds, butterflies and other wildlife you would like to see visit your backyard and then choose plants that will attract those species.

Here are some things you can do to create your wildlife habitat:

• Plant shrubs and trees ranging in size and density which bear berries, fruit and flowers and can provide food and shelter for migrating and local birds.
• The addition of native wildflowers and other native plants can increase the beauty of your property and you'll get an added bonus of plants that conserve water and are easy to care for. This is a "win-win" situation.
• Don't forget those vines. Flowering vines are also a big hit with numerous birds, bees and butterflies.
• Provide a fresh water source such as a bird bath or pond
• If you would like to add feeders, there are various types for birds and butterflies from which to choose.

A little homework can determine the plants you would like to have in your yard and provide an attractive habitat for birds, butterflies, and other interesting wildlife. Attracting wildlife to your yard can provide numerous hours of entertainment for you, your family and your entire neighborhood.
