Kurume Azaleas

Kurume Hybrid Azaleas

Kurume Azalea Selector

Kurume azaleas are some of the most popular types in the south and Kurumes can be found at almost any house along the Tyler Azalea Trail. Popularity is due to their early and heavy bloom and their relatively small plant size, fitting in nicely in many landscape situations calling for dwarf or small sized plants. There are over 300 surviving Kurume hybrid cultivars, although only a dozen or so are popular or common.

Characteristics and landscape use:

Kurumes are evergreen, early blooming azaleas with abundant flowers typically hiding the leaves. Most are compact, upright to mounding in shape growing to 3 ' to 5' tall. Flower colors include pink, red, purple and white. Flowers are mostly single and small (1/2" to 1 1/2" wide).

Kurumes are good for foreground plants in front of evergreens or in highly visible locations where a low growth habit is needed. Despite their popularity, Kurumes are one of the most susceptible azalea groups to Phytophthora root and crown rot. Therefore, excellent soil preparation and water management are imperative to avoid root rot. Well-drained, highly organic soil, and even soil moisture will keep plants healthy and less likely to be affected by Phytophthora.
