Brief description of county program:
Bexar County is an urban county of 1.3 million. It includes the 10th largest city in the nation, San Antonio. Over 50% of the population are ethnic minorities, most individuals are of Hispanic origin. The county has a large $31 million wholesale nursery industry. The Extension Service programming services the wholesale ornamental industry and relies on an extensive media and volunteer effort to service the gardening public. Over 10,000 youth garden in Extension Service/Master Gardener sponsored youth gardens. The youth effort includes the Green Brigade, a learn and earn program for juvenile offenders. Partnerships with water purveyors allow a largewater conservation program including Xeriscape Contest, Model Gardens, Watersaver Rebates, and Public Presentations.
