Lawn Care

Transcript

Everybody's into lawn work, there's a lot of things to be done. Especially people with big dogs. They're worried about those paths in their lawns that they don't know what in the world or how to get rid of it. Those are dog paths believe it or not. There's a high correlation between having a big dog and having an ugly lawn.

This will help in an area where you have a dog run or whatever, and this is what we call a plugger. It literally takes out cores of soil out of your area. Now, you want to make sure that these are available from rental places. And you want to make sure that you get one that literally removes the core of soil from the soil rather than just punching a hole. And this thing can be rented. Run it over the compacted area several times. It will loosen the area up and your grass will do a little bit better.

Now, of course, since people are into lawn care, and we've cut our lawns, or scalped them like most of us have, we're ready to start fertilization. We have some good slow release fertilizers that will feed our lawn all summer long. 19-5-9 is one analysis and then 22-3-3 is another. But either of these, applied now, will mean that you will only have to fertilize twice this entire year, once now and once in the fall, about October. And they will slowly release throughout the year and make your lawn pretty.

Be sure to use a fertilizer spreader so you get good even distribution and there is no reason in the world you can't have a professional looking lawn and enjoy cutting that grass all summer long.

This is been Jerry Parsons Vegetable Specialist for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service the Weekend Gardener.
