Controlling Weeds in Lawns

Transcript

You know when you go out and look at your yard at this time of the year even the dogs hate to go out and roam in these big weeds. They're afraid they might not find their way back to the house.

People say, "Well what I guess I need to do is fertilize." No. You never fertilize at this time of the year because that will just make the weeds grow. They're the only thing that's green and growing.

So what you do is put on a weed killer. Now a lot of people say, "Well I'll put on a weed and feed. That's a fertilizer with weed and feed written on there." The problem with weed and feed is that first of all it doesn't kill all the weeds, and the ones it doesn't kill will grow like the dickens, and secondly your grass is not growing actively so it won't do you any good to put out a fertilizer this time of the year. There's also not a slow release weed and feed.

So what we recommend is wait until after you mow the grass twice, not the weeds twice, but the grass twice, such as Bermuda or St. Augustine, and then go ahead and use you're slow release such as 19-5-9 fertilizer after you've mowed the lawn twice.

Now if you want to spray with something now to kill these weeds rather than just mowing them and getting some good exercise use some of these weed killers that are approved for St. Augustine. That would be Weed-be-Gone for Southern grasses, Wipe-out, or some of those things. If you have Bermuda you can use MSMA or DSMA. So don't make the mistake now and fertilize the weeds. Wait a little while and you'll have plenty to cut this summer.
