Columbines for Texas

Transcript

I'm sitting in a bed of mighty pretty flowers here but only one of them will come back year after year and that's this most spectacular thing I'm sitting in right here and it's called the Columbine. Now these have been available on the market for quite a while and like I said they are one of the most spectacular spring blooming perennials that we have. The nice thing about Columbine is they will also do well in the shade. They are the most magnificent shade blooming plants available.

The problem is you've got to get this yellow one. They are other types of Columbine being sold in this area but this is the only one that will perennialize from year to year on a consistent basis. Like I said, all you have to do after these things finish their spectacular bloom is shred them to the ground because they don't bloom during the summer only about two weeks in the spring. Just shred them to the ground and then plant something like blue shade if you've got these things growing in the shade. Or can plant another summer annual over them and don't worry about looking at the ugly foliage all year because they are perennial and the roots will live.

As you can see we have pansies in front of it. These beautiful nicotiana flowering tobacco that last quite a while but they do have to be planted every year. So you might want to think about looking for some of these Hinckley Columbine; that's what they're sold, as is Hinckley Columbine (now named 'Texas Gold' Columbine). Like I said there are many other Columbine's in different colors, but unfortunately only the yellow one is the one that will last. But as you can see when you look at the spikes and the beautiful blooms on this Hinckley Columbine it's certainly worth waiting for the beauty of them. Even the butterflies are coming around taking a look.

This is Jerry Parsons, Vegetable Specialist for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, the Weekend Gardener.
