Vitex - The Other Blue Flower
[Song- Blue by LeAnn Rimes]
Yea, everybody likes blue, especially that song and if you look in the wild you don't see a lot of true blue flowers. However, Morning Glories are one of them and if you look out into the wildflower patches, sometimes along the side of the road, you'll see a lot of them blooming that are true blue.
Of course when most people think about blue they think about lilac, especially people from the north, and unfortunately we can't grow good lilacs down here. Unfortunately lilac, it smells nice, but it just doesn't get cold enough down in this area of Texas to make it work.
What we have to use for something blue and in a shrub form is Vitex. This is Vitex I'm standing around. As you can see it relatively disease free, insect free, and has a beautiful blue flower, even though it's not fragrant. So remember when you're thinking about blue,
like LeAnn Rimes likes, there are some plants that you can choose that are blue in Texas.
This is Jerry Parsons, Vegetable Specialist for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, the Weekend Gardener.
