Planting Potatoes

Transcript

Well it's time to plant potatoes. As you know last week we planted onions so know it must be pretty close to time to plant potatoes. I'm going to tell exactly how to know when it's time to plant potatoes, onions, and everything else so get your pencil and paper ready.

The main thing about planting potatoes is you have to put them in a trench. If you get a larger potato you probably need to cut it into two or three pieces, equal distant pieces, and make sure that each piece has an eye on it. Of course when you have this open wound you don't want to plant that directly in the soil, it might rot, so you get some of your ashes out of the fireplace or something. Some people are always wanting to use ashes in their garden. Just dip it straight in there and that coats or seals it. Then you can plant that right in the ground with the eye facing up.

This is Jerry Parsons, Vegetable Specialist for the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, the Weekend Gardener.
