Q: Can we grow peonies in this area.
A: Peonies do not do well in this area. They require pronounced winter chilling in well prepared beds or holes. If someone wants to take a chance and try peonies do the following: Set out new or transplants in October or early November in a part-sun well- drained location (best on the northeast side of the yard) with no root competition. They should be 2 to 4 feet apart barely covered with soil. Use bonemeal in Nov, Feb and May plus superphosphate in Feb and May. Feed once a month Feb to Aug. Water well year-round. Select varieties that bloom early.
