Speakers - Schedule

About The Speakers

Mary Anne Pickens, Texas garden historian and Vice President of the Southern Garden History Society, will talk on Adina de Zavala - In Search of a Garden.

Greg Grant, Texas horticulturist, author, and now director of Plant Propagation and Development at the Naconiche Nursery near Nacogdoches, Texas, will discuss two separate subjects: San Antonio's "Belgian Farmers" and Their Sustainable Gardening Practices and Featured Plants for the Oktober Gartenfest Sale - especially the rare and unusual items to be bid for in the special Silent Plant Auction. Many of these will be heirloom varieties, rare cultivars or interesting new introductions.

William D. Adams is a retired Texas Extension Horticulturist who has for many years lectured and written about fruit and vegetable varieties for the Texas garden. He'll speak on Sustainable Fruits for Texas Gardens. His slides will surely whet the appetite of the audience to try their hands at home fruit production.

Lucinda Hutson, colorful and energetic speaker on herbs, ornamentals, and ethnic foods, will speak on Favorite Edibles and Ornamentals in a Kitchen Garden. Lucinda "garnishes" her gardens much as she does her plates - with color and pizzaz. In this vibrant slide show, she will share ideas for growing and using some of her favorite easy-to-grow herbs and ornamentals.

Billy Kniffen, Extension Agent from Menard County, will share his expertise on rainwater retention in his presentation, Rainwater Capture/Harvesting. These valuable tips will aid gardeners in conserving a scarce natural resource as well as providing a better quality of water for the garden and the home landscape.
